Sermon: Core Values – Biblical Teaching
Reading: 2 Timothy 3: 10-17
Sermon Date: January 14, 2018

Icebreaker

Can you name a book (other than the Bible) that has had a significant impact on your life? When did you read it and how did it affect you?

Study

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

    1. Can you share anything you remember about the sermon you heard on Sunday?

In the Jewish tradition the Scriptures were and are extremely important. They learn the Tanakh, which is our Old Testament. The Tanakh is divided in three: The Torah (known as “teaching” or law), Prophets and Writings (which include the poetic books). These are actually the Scriptures the letter (2 Timothy) is talking about, because the gospels weren’t available yet and the whole New Testament wasn’t recognised as “Holy Scriptures” either. Even though most of the New Testament was recognised as inspired by God and with authority even in the first century, it wasn’t until the fourth century that it was officially accepted as being Holy Scriptures. As Christians we agree that this passage can be used for both the Old and New Testament.

Christians agree that the Bible is inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training. The problem we find many times is that there are many ways in which we can read and interpret the Bible and therefore reach very different conclusions.

    2. Do you believe that the Bible is God’s word? What does this mean?
    3. In what ways to you find it difficult to interact with people who interpret the Bible in a different way?

Please read 2 Timothy 3:10-17

4.How do your beliefs affect the way you live?
5.How much of your view of the world is founded on the Bible? In what ways does your understanding of the Bible affect this?
6.Do you think your wisdom is affected by the Holy Scriptures?
7.In what ways is the Scripture useful in your daily living?

Our Core Values say we believe that: “BIBLICAL TEACHING is foundational for a whole life faith”.

8.Do you think that biblical teaching is foundational for your life? In what ways?
9.How do you respond to the Biblical teaching you hear at Church?
10.Do you spend time reading the Bible at home? How do you do this? (e.g. read the Bible in one year, read a chapter per day, read every now and then, etc.)
11.How would you like to read and study the Bible during the next few months?

Action

If you haven’t yet, spend some time as a group discussing good practices to read and study the Bible. Then spend a few minutes praying that God’s word will transform us and that we might have a healthy discipline of reading the Bible.
